Types of Burns
Understanding burn severity

First-Degree Burns

Affects outer layer of skin only:

  • Redness
  • Minor swelling
  • Pain
  • Dry, peeling skin as it heals

Second-Degree Burns

Affects outer and some of inner layer of skin:

  • Blisters
  • Severe pain
  • Red, splotchy skin
  • Swelling

Third-Degree Burns

Affects all layers of skin - MEDICAL EMERGENCY:

  • White or blackened skin
  • Dry, leathery texture
  • Little or no pain (nerve damage)
  • Requires immediate medical attention
Immediate Treatment Steps
For first and second-degree burns
  1. Ensure safety
    • Stop the burning process
    • Remove person from heat source
    • Remove smoldering clothing unless stuck to skin
  2. Cool the burn
    • Run cool (not cold) water over the area
    • Continue for 10-20 minutes
    • Do not use ice
  3. Remove constricting items
    • Rings, watches, jewelry
    • Tight clothing
  4. Cover the burn
    • Use sterile, non-stick bandage
    • Wrap loosely to avoid pressure
    • Do not break blisters
When to Seek Medical Care

Seek immediate medical attention if:

  • Burns are deep or larger than 3 inches
  • Burns are on face, hands, feet, or genitals
  • Burns cross major joints
  • Chemical or electrical burns
  • Victim is very young or elderly
  • Signs of infection appear:
    • Increased pain
    • Redness
    • Swelling
    • Warmth
    • Pus or discharge
